Members of the Illustrative Mathematics team recently attended two national conferences for math educators: NCSM (Sept 26–28, 2022) in Anaheim, CA, and NCTM (Sept 28–Oct 1, 2022) in Los Angeles. We enjoyed meeting so many thoughtful educators over the course of the week! We left feeling invigorated about the possibilities that exist within and beyond the math classroom.
If we missed you, or you weren’t able to attend, read our NCSM and NCTM round-up below. You’ll find a description of each session, as well as slide decks used during the presentations.
Imagine Learning Breakfast with Dr. Bill McCallum, co-founder and CEO of Illustrative Mathematics, Equity in Mathematics Instruction
Dr. Bill McCallum, IM CEO
The IM vision is to create a world where all learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics. How do we effectively implement quality instructional materials into today’s diverse classrooms? This involves commitment and collaboration to ensure all students have access to rigorous, problem-based math instruction.

Imagine Learning Sponsored Showcase: Supporting Teachers with Incorporating Productive Mathematical Discussion
Lisa Matthews, Instructional Coach and Illustrative Mathematics Certified Facilitator
Promoting productive and meaningful conversations between students and teachers is essential to success in a problem-based classroom. The 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions—Anticipating, Monitoring, Selecting, Sequencing, and Connecting—can be used to build an inclusive classroom community where students enjoy mathematics, make mathematical connections, and develop conceptual understanding. In this session, attendees will learn how to support teachers in guiding student discourse, synthesizing understanding, and facilitating interactive lessons with confidence using the Five Practices framework. The presenter will model effective strategies for using these throughout daily instruction in IM K–12 Math from Imagine Learning, an IM-certified partner.

Curriculum Implementation Assessment as an Impetus for Creating a Shared Vision and Facilitating Change
Liz Ramirez and Jennifer Wilson
Join us to learn about a non-evaluative implementation reflection tool that instructional leaders can use to enhance classroom observation, reflection, and feedback; support collaborative conversations and deep reflection about strengths and opportunities for improvement; and inform a shared vision for mathematics teaching and learning. During the session we will practice using the tool during a calibration activity with classroom video.

Building a Coherent Instructional System around Open Educational Resources
Presented by Dr. Bill McCallum, IM CEO
At Illustrative Mathematics we are developing a vision of what we call the IM Classroom, where quality instructional materials, problem-based instruction, and administrative support work together. I will describe our work to ensure that all students, particularly students from marginalized groups, have access to an IM Classroom.

Mathematical Language Routines: Cultivating Conversation in Middle School Classrooms
Presented by Vanessa Cerrahoglu, Liz Ramirez, Jennifer Wilson
Come learn how math language routines simultaneously support sense making and language development. We’ll experience these routines to see how mathematical ideas take shape through language, and look at student work to see how discourse can support understanding and develop community, giving all students access to high-quality math instruction.

Mathematical Language Routines: Cultivating Conversation in High School Classrooms
Presented by Vanessa Cerrahoglu, Liz Ramirez, Jennifer Wilson
Let’s explore how math language routines create space for student voice, simultaneously fostering mathematical understanding. We’ll experience these routines and look at student work to understand the power of these structures to (re)humanize mathematics teaching and learning for all students.

#SlowMath: Looking for and Making Use of Structure
Presented by Vanessa Cerrahoglu, Liz Ramirez, Jennifer Wilson
We want all students to be able to say, “I can look for and make use of structure.” But how do we support the struggle to learn? What expressions, equations, and diagrams require making what isn’t pictured visible? Let’s engage in tasks for which making use of structure can provide an advantage and invite students to make their thinking visible.

Features in IM K–12 Math that Support Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
Presented by Dionne Aminata, IM Sr. Director of Strategic Initiatives
Districts across the country are addressing inequities in math education by implementing culturally responsive pedagogy. IM K–12 Math is designed to support this effort. In this session, we will highlight design features that support teachers implementing culturally responsive pedagogy in their classrooms, offer an opportunity for teachers and leaders to review the curriculum with this lens, and provide space to reflect on how it can benefit teachers and students.

Supporting Culturally Responsive Pedagogy with IM K–5 Math™
Presented by Dr. LaToya M. Byrd, IM Director of PL Implementation and Talent
Districts across the country are addressing inequities in math education by implementing culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy. In this session, we will explore the design features of IM K–5 Math that support this effort.
